About Ashford Castle

Ashford Castle: A Timeless Irish Icon

Ashford Castle, nestled in the picturesque village of Cong in County Mayo, Ireland, is one of the most iconic and historic castles in the world. Its origins date back to 1228, when it was built by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family. Over the centuries, it has transformed from a medieval stronghold into a lavish estate, steeped in history and charm.

The castle’s modern legacy began in the 19th century when it was purchased by the Guinness family, who expanded and enhanced its grandeur. During this time, it became a playground for aristocrats and notable figures. U.S. President Ronald Reagan famously stayed at Ashford Castle during his 1984 trip to Ireland, adding to its prestige. Other illustrious guests include King George V of England, who visited during the Guinness family’s ownership, and members of European royalty.

Ashford Castle has also attracted a constellation of Hollywood stars. Pierce Brosnan, who married at the castle in 2001, highlighted its romantic allure. John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara were drawn to its charm while filming The Quiet Man nearby, cementing its place in cinematic history. Other celebrities like Brad Pitt, Barbra Streisand, and members of the Kennedy family have all graced its storied halls, furthering its reputation as a haven for the elite.

With its blend of ancient history, Guinness-era opulence, and a reputation as a retreat for royalty, political icons, and Hollywood legends, Ashford Castle stands as a symbol of Ireland’s rich heritage and timeless elegance.
